Promundo is a Brazilian non-governmental organization seeking to promote gender equality and the prevention of violence with a focus on the involvement of men and women in the transformation and ressignificance of masculinities. Promundo´s headquarters are based in Brasilia, Federal District, Brazil.
We believe that working with men and boys to transform unequal norms and power dynamics is a strategic factor in achieving gender equity. For women’s empowerment to continue to advance, men and boys need to become allies in the process, realizing that they also benefit when harmful gender norms are questioned. Our research, programs and actions to influence public policies (advocacy) show that promoting positive notions about what it means to be a man or woman provides improvements to their lives.
Our actions seek to generate transformations at different levels, such as interventions in groups with men and women, campaigns, educational methodologies and dialogue with institutions and governments to influence policies and expand programs that bring about social change.
Major organizations including the United Nations, the World Bank, the World Health Organization and national governments have already supported our cause, working as partners in our initiatives or adopting our programs and implementing them in countless communities around the world.
Promundo is financed by national and local governments, foundations, international organizations, large non-governmental organizations and through individual donations.
Promundo works to promote gender equality and build a world free of violence involving men and boys in partnership with women and girls.
We envision a world in which all people work to create a non-violent future, with care and gender equity for themselves, their daughters and their sons.
